Exactly it just takes practice. And lots of it! You'll die a lot. A hell of a lot actually. It'll be a bit frustrating. I'd suggest not worrying about your stats or rank when you're first starting . use this time to get used to the engagements

i rarely detect footprints through mini-map, i use sounds then sight
