The Sega Saturn Hardware Buyers Guide

An episode about the various styles and makes of Sega Saturn hardware.

NOTES:
Many of these systems have pack in games. Virtua Fighter Remix appeared in many of them.

There are a few systems here that have different boxes and themes available. There are Xmas Nights and Sonic versions of the White Model 2 Saturn for instance.

I tried to focus on the main entries for each type of system, and avoid nuances like pack in games, pack in peripherals, or special boxes.

My launch grey Saturn shown in this video was bought day 1 when the system hit Japan. It cost me $700+ to get it next day.

Of all my Saturn’s(I own 8), the model 2 has been the most unreliable. I have had 2 fail. One with a CD drive, one with the mainboard.

If you are just starting out with the Saturn, I recommend the grey Japanese system as your first purchase. They are cheap, reliable, and easy to find.

The Samsung and Navi Saturn’s are the last of the products I truly want in my collection. Price and availability being a major obstacle.

I didn’t mention it in the video, but the Western released Model 1 Saturn’s came with a different controller than the launch Japanese units. This controller wasn’t the worst, but the Japanese pad killed it overall.

The Derby Stallion Saturn actually didn’t have the game with it. It was released along side the game, and included a special sticker set.

Music in this episode in order:
Gain Ground – Awaken
Ghouls N Ghost – Stage 1
Batman – Intro
Hang On GP – Albatross Cliff Reef
Castlevania Bloodlines – Bloody Tears
Contra Hard Corps – Hard Corp Blues
Thunder Force V – Legendary Wings
Shadow Dancer – Stage 2-1
TMNT Hyperstone Heist – New York

Never was a Sega fan and then I found your channel at the start of covid and now they're my favorite games company. I'm now a happy owner of a modded Genesis Mini, Dreamcast with a MODE, and my favorite of all, a white Sega Saturn. Just saving up for a Satiator so I can Play Panzer Dragoon Saga! 🙂 and now having been on the out side for so long I realize that as bad as the decisions Sega made were, the entire industry was really doing all they could to ensure Sega failed and I am lost as to why. Why didn't EA reverse engineer the Nintendo first? Why did publications slam Sega all the time to make people like me think wrongly they were lousy? I don't understand, but they're the best. I just graduated College and even applied for a job at Sega so fingers crossed I get it! 🙂 all this to say, thank you! All the happiness Sega has given me has been because I stumbled into your channel and your passion rubbed of onto me

Loved saturn, but always bought Japanese imports. The west was handled badly. I have a Derby stallion and had to seek out the outrun p1k version. I may buy a model 1 again at since point since it was my original. It broke in 2003 with graphical glitches.

Just bought a mint model 1 japanese launch unit (gray). I also bought an RGB/SCART to Component Video converter and the image looks divine on my 29'' Sony CRT.
Now the next step is to get a Fenrir or a Satiator, but I haven't decided which one I should get.

I have the mk-80000a US version and the Japanese hst-3210. Is one better than the other? I plan on selling one but not sure

Ive seen a HiSaturn NAVI once, a friend of mine owns a retro game shop and one day I popped in and in one of the display cases there it was. Honestly one of the coolest things ive ever seen, it was just the console with no controllers or anything, but it was still up there for £1000

Sega Lord X seen and liked your videos, I always wanted a sega genesis but never had the money for one when I was 10. Once the Sega mini came up for sell here on the states I pre-order one I played it now that I'm 35 my first Sega experience and I think to myself I really missed out on some bad to the bone games

Would the Salon 40 volume cream method (used in shoe restoration) work with un-yellowing these sega saturn cases?

Had no idea there was even two different models. I thought it only applied to the joypads. Interesting info.

I actually just picked up a Victor Saturn, for only $100, with$10 shipping from Japan. Person was extremely nice, I couldn't help getting it.

As a bonus, had a video card attachment inside the battery area! Wasn't expecting it, but it's cool to have just for the sake of having it for reasons.

I've always wanted a Sega Saturn ever since I was a kid. And it blows my mind that the cartridge slot in the back didn't allow backwards compatibility with Sega Genesis games. What a missed opportunity.

Sega put very good disc drives in the Saturn. I have a later US model with the better looking controlle. Last time i fired up my Saturn a few years ago it worked with no issues.
