Why We Need More Horror Elements For Metroid Prime 4

What is Metroid Prime 1.5? The answer to the question I think is the main reason why I want more of a horror focus in Metroid Prime 4 for the Nintendo Switch. Lets talk about this forgotten Retro Studios project.

I am extremely in favor of the A.I idea. That’s a concept that would make everything much more thrilling. The warship idea kinda concerns me, as the environment probably wouldn’t be very unique.

I feel Nintendo should just go for it and make Metroid their own M rated IP and just go all in with the horror and mystery. Just like fuse Metroid with say Dead Space and Alien: Isolation. I would love to see what they come up with. Regardless I'm hopeful for horror and mystery. If we are lucky when Retro got Prime 4 they negotiated a 1.5 after, lol

To be honest I don't like the idea of Metroid taking place on one single space shit. Sounds like a boring environment to be stuck in for an entire game. The next Metroid needs to be much bigger then that. Maybe we can have one space ship as an environment, but we also need alot more. I think the series should stick to what MP3 attempted to do and improve on it. Spanning the adventure over an entire system. Maybe even being able to control the ship yourself between the different levels.

Metroid prime 2 was horror based imo. Very eerie game, honestly probably darker than what you described here. The atmosphere and scannable bodies and relics told creepy stories without actual story telling. Thus method of storytelling has proved superior in recent years with dark souls, bloodborne, botw etc.

I would love to have horror elements in MP4, as long as they don't make the game any slower. A lot of horror games tend to force the character to be slower, or to do certain actions in a more linear way. What I really want is that MP gameplay we know and love, with a more creepy enemy design, story, and world atmosphere.

I remember reading about this some months ago. You didn't mention it in the video, but I also liked the mission/horde modes that were part of 1.5's concept. I like the idea of protecting a singer/celebrity in a club from being assassinated, or other "smaller" missions Samus could take on as a bounty hunter. They could make them seperate from the story mode and have the selectable via the main menu.

I think it could be cool if they revived this concept as part of a Season Pass/DLC pack for Prime 4, or maybe a cheaper stand alone realese, like what they did with Xenoblade 2's Torna DLC.

Haven't watched the video yet, as it just started playing. But I'll tell you – my favorite Metroid memory is of me being 5-6 years old, literally hiding behind my dad's back in a recliner as he played through the original Ripley's lair, hearing the creepy music, and peeking around him in excitement. It WAS scary. And in 8 bits. Horror is what Metroid was intended to make us feel. Walking along, and suddenly a (fake) KRAID SHOWS UP IN A HALLWAY and you say, "Holy crap!!" And drowning in lava, trying to get out while your jumps are restricted, with the BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP of your low energy, all the while there is a giant purple seahorse monster flying out of the lava and a BUG – ON FIRE, crawling around the one ledge you can reach. If you get out, you're just back in the maze of confusion. And wondering whether you should choose the wave beam or the ice beam for the mission, hoping you don't choose incorrectly, making your own hand-drawn maps.

would love to have this idea made into an actual game! We have enough bright games from Nintendo so more horror in Metroid would be great imo.

Hey that sounds pretty sick. What would be pretty cool too is if, While in the ship you meet the hunters from Metroid Prime hunters, because the ship has managed to catch them as well, some new ones too. That would be pretty cool.

Metroid should take more risks with horror, for me I’m not a fan of horror games, movies, media, etc since I’m not used to it.. I know I’m a cry baby but it’s just how I am. Anyways Metroid could benefit a lot from this scrapped 1.5 ideas, it could show people that Nintendo doesn’t have to be looked at just for kids, Nintendo’s games are for everyone of any age, it can show Nintendo can go beyond the elements of horror and scare the living pants out of you! Keep up the amazing work Andre! 😀

While this is quite different to what we eventually got with prime 2, it's interesting to note how this concept would have influenced the horror aspects of that game, if not it's primary focus it was still a much bigger part of prime 2 than 1.

I always loved this pitch. But I know it wouldn't've been possible on Gamecube. Hell, some the most advanced games on 7th Gen consoles dont have the same amount of features as this. While I'm not sure I would want this to be the new template for the series; it would be perfect for a universe building spin off.

In fact for that game I'd likely drop Samus entirely and let the player choose one from a pool of hunters. Allowing for many more abilities, forms of play and overall different playthru's or narrative paths. It could show that other unlikely souls are saving the universe in unseen ways much like Samus.

I really trust in Nintendo and RetroStudios, I think that (after messing up the last 2 Metroid Games) they both know what Metroid fans want and I'm sure we will have horror and mistery for Metroid Prime 4 as key elements for the game. At least that's for sure what we all want.
Really interesting video Andres, good job.

Most of Nintendos games are pretty soft rn. We need more games in the same vein as the Prime games, Twilight Princess, Smash Brawl, Sin and Punishment etc etc
