Game of the Decade: The Witcher 3

Is it possible to choose a video game of the decade? There’s so many to choose from, and it’s impossible to compare games (especially outside genres). Ultimately, I narrowed it down to a few games which I discuss in this video: Dark Souls, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, God of War, and The Witcher 3.

Thanks for sticking with me through this year. I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’ve been doing a lot of changing in the last few months in the way I approach making content. There will be more changes and new things happening on this channel very soon, so stay tuned.

Big shout out to all my fans out there! You guys are the best.

Thumbs this video up if you'd like to see an "Indie Game of The Decade video." Likes help me gauge interest for future similiar videos. I could get it out sometime in the next week as I already have the game in mind for it.

Either way, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to watch my content this year. Next year, big changes are coming to Downward Thrust, both in how videos are made and my general attitude towards game critique. Let's just say I'm going to be celebrating more games rather than provoking controversy (whether warranted or not).

Anyway, I've covered The Witcher 3 in-depth, but I could not deny it Game of the Decade. Instead of repeat what I've already said about the game, I decided to bring in other games and topics before going into why The Witcher 3 is the best of them all. Obviously, there is no measurement here: this is personal, yet I think the widespread acclaim for the game speaks for itself.

This is a discussion video, so it's not all about The Witcher 3. Want to skip straight to The Witcher 3 conversation? 3:24

What is your Game of the Decade and why? What makes it so special?

Witcher 3 and the 1st Deus Ex are the games to surpass in my eyes.

I've seen some very good contenders but none has reached that status yet (personal opinion obviously).

It's a masterpiece, this coming from someone that's just finished a second play through. Initially I would 100% agree, but the smile that randomly appeared on my face, and the instant emotions that is evoked by God of War just solidifies the knowledge it's the game of the decade. My mind tells me it's the Witcher 3, but my heart tells me it's God of War. If you're a father, the father son dynamic achieved with GOW is unforgettable. It's incredible and though I genuinely love the Witcher, I found myself hurrying through my second okay through, so I could do the same with GOW. I decided against a NG+, and for a moment considered a playthrough afterwards, but ultimately chose GOW.

    Tom Park purchase this game!

The Witcher 3 is great. I played it for the first time in the winter of 2021. I was blown away by the story-telling. I played Nier Automata right after. At the time, personally, I thought Automata was the "better" game due to the plot twists and philosophical themes. Oh, and Automata's soundtrack is amazing. At this point I could go either way, both are great games.

Not enough is said about how alive the map is, the ambient sounds the noise when running through a puddle, the small details are amazing. The environment looks so naturally made, the different accents depending what region your in really help to give it life. Love the game (apart from the controls and movement) best game I have ever played Infront of mass effect and Skyrim.

Don't really care about the clunky controls or the combat system. It's the world and the story that adds so much soul and joy to the game. There is so much love for detail, so much lore and depth, references to real world mythology, intriguing characters and plot twists.

I’m finally going through the game on Nintendo Switch and I am currently engrossed in everything Witcher 3. One quest that stood out to me because of the dialogue and the twist halfway through was the quest line with Fyke Island and Keira Wentz. I cleared the island for Keira and was expecting some run of the mill reward and be sent on my way but the quest threw me for a loop at the end and I won’t spoil it for people but the amount of choices you have to complete this quest was amazing to me . I also found later on after some reading that there was an option to end the quest line prematurely if the correct dialogue was selected . It made me think about all the previous quests that I had done and what I could have done differently or said differently. Sometimes choosing the correct dialogue can be the difference between life and death for a side character. I’m excited for the rest of the game and know I’ll be putting in 100+ hours .

i agree with the fact the the wild hunt and nilfgaard felt rushed. i think we needed another game to fully encapsulate the story.

Gunter O'dimm is the best villain in video game ever.

It's funny that he isn't even really a villain….. He doesn't do anything bad to you… In fact he "helps" you…… Still

One of the things that makes witcher 3 the best of all time. The combat isnt what brings people coming back. It's everything else going on. Although I think the combat is the best in any game I've played to the point that playing wither 3 on death March is easy because the combat is smooth and does what I need it to the mila second I press a button and it's intuitive not that I won't get brutalized if I stay still. But if I don't have skill it's hard but it's easy when your used to the combat

More like the biggest trash and overrated game of the decade. Maybe ever. I can’t believe people actually like this dumb boring glitchy horrible pathetic game. I hated this game more than any game I’ve ever played since Atari.

I feel like the lack of screen time and information about the wild hunt in the game is actually what made them so interesting, definitely agree with a lot of your other points though.

It all feels like a huge hallucination seeing the comments praising and considering this game to be almost flawless.

Best game of the decade? You must be dreaming. Retrospectively, there are many other defining titles, to consider The Witcher 3 as a GOTD is ridiculously subjective.
It's sad that to see many amazing games being ridiculed, games that serve on uniquely different levels of quality.

Dude the only bad thing about what you're 3 is that when you're done the main quest all the primary characters except dandelion Just disappear from the world like they were spirited away. Instead of getting to see how their lives are going after completing the main storyline where you live and getting that sense of satisfaction it satisfaction and Visiting old friends in between looking for new side quests, It feels like we guy ghosted by our girlfriend.

This has to be the most Misleading title I've come across in a long time. Advertised as a video about why which or 3 was the game of the decadeAnd what it didWhat is accomplished what it did that so many games games have never done before or since. And instead I get…. Whatever this is?This should have been a top 10 list of games of the decadeInsidering how much time you spend talking about other games.

3:29 I genuinely cannot understand why so many people think this game is a 10/10 or game of the decade. Many people seem to share the same opinion of the fighting being: "clunky, stiff, awkward indoors" "floaty combat" "in combat, movement can feel graceless" "unnatural" "unresponsive." ask yourself, are these really descriptions of THE game of the decade? No chance. I think for me, the core combat gameplay is the single most important part of a game (Especially a sword fighting game). That why i love games like darksouls, sekiro, & god of war, and just cannot get on board with wither 3, though I did try. I'm not saying its a bad game either, but the extreme praise of a game with such a clunky combat system always confused me.
