Nintendo Wii U in 2022 – Retrospective Review

The Wii U was a failure of immense degree- achieving the status of lowest selling home console from Nintendo besides the Virtual Boy. But that doesn’t mean it was bad, and in 2022 it may just be more impressive than you’d expect.

Something I forgot to mention in the video that's pretty cool- following poor sales of the Wii U, Nintendo Execs actually took pay-cuts, with President Satoru Iwata himself taking a 50% cut in 2014. Just a level of accountability you don't usually see in any industry, thought that was worth a mention.
Also, to clarify- Nintendo Network Premium was a loyalty program, but online itself was free. My explanation wasn't clear. Thanks to those who pointed this out!

"The Wii U was a failure of immense degree" no not really… why do you people always need to oversell it like that?

Another thing that happened with the WiiU Third Party Games. Battlefield IV was in Beta for the WiiU, and then EA canceled it. GTA V was also supposed to be on WiiU but was canceled in development.

3 steps of owning a console
Step 1: Get console for the first time and love it
Step 2: Realize flaws and consider selling it
Step 3: Console dies and you realize how special it was

I will never understand the hate that the Wii-U got during its lifetime. Sure, it had its flaws, but EVERY Console does. I remember people's biggest complaints were the Wii-U's tablet controller, which has the exact same features that the exact same haters love about the Switch. My personal view is that most gamers viewed the Wii as a "Kid's Console" and that attitude carried over to the Wii-U as well, and Nintendo's own marketing didn't help & only solidified that attitude. I got the Wii-U and I loved it. I mostly bought non Nintendo games but I really enjoyed the use of the tablet controller. Its a nice feeling to play watching the tv screen but having to look down at the tablet controller screen to swap inventory items or use tablet to snipe & so on. And lets be real, if it wasn't for the Wii-U then the Switch simply would NOT exist. The Switch took the same concept but improved upon it while avoiding the Wii-U's failures.

I think they found something with switch. Stick with switch and keep upgrading. It’s the perfect idea and with the right hardware it will be the best console for sure.

I don't usually comment, but around 2015-2016 (not sure which year) my brother and I saw the splatoon commercials on tv and instantly wanted a wii u. We bought a wii u purely for splatoon but we actually playing our wii u rarely because we had also recently bought Mincraft for pc a little later. Then with fortnite on the rise, though we didn't start playing fortnite as soon as it came out (started playing it around chapter 1 season 3), it further dis-insetivised us to play our wii u.
Though I have recently added the wii u to my gaming set up for me to use which I do often.

Many memories made on that wii u, playing minecraft & splatoon.

The Wii U is the only 21st century device you cannot play Skyrim on. I have a fridge that can play Skyrim…

As a kid my Dad got me a Wii, and I loved playing Wii Sports, but one day the disc broke. Soon I got into MarioKart, and i dominated every game I played.

"The Wii U has the most complete Nintendo library… but don't spend $100 on one".

Lol I mean classic consoles or the regular Wii are around that price range. Hard to pass on insane library depth and value for $100ish. Collectors will be driving Wii U only up from here so if anyone's on the fence the time is quite literally right now to buy one.

I think fifa 14 being made for the ps2 was simply for publicity. You and I talk about that game series more because of it and the investment for that one odd port made years and years of free advertisement

I remember wanting a Wii U so much as a kid. All my friends had one and I honestly wanted it more for the games. I got a new 3ds on launch but I always wanted the Wii U for splatoon, 3d world and mario party. But I still had a blast whenever I went to my friends’ houses and played on theirs.

It also didn't help that in their very own commercial refers to being upgraded. Even Nintendo'a own advertising makes Wii U sound like an add on

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I love my wii u, but I feel like a large part of that is the fact that I bought it for 40 bucks in 2019 from a coworker who didn't' even want to take money for it at first

The WiiU wasn't just Nintendo trying to recapture the success of Wii – it was an attempt to combine the successful features of the Wii and the DS. The DS was also a very big seller for nintendo and loads of third parites supported it and came up with things it's second screen could do… Nintendo thought that third parties would jump at the opportunity to develop innovative games for the console and find interesting things to do with its second screen – because they'd done it before on DS… Developers however looked at the much more similar specs of Xbox and Playstation and decided that their combined market share was more lucrative… as a result there was a dearth of third party support. The few developers that did support the console either treated it as an afterthought to eke out a little more cash from games that had already released on other hardware or ended up changing their wiiU games to multiplatform titles mid developement. Ports of games to WiiU were notably released much later, often lacked DLC, and were priced at full price whilst their versions on other hardware were sitting in the bargain bin… Mass Effect was a notable example with the third game releasing on WiiU at full market price then only weeks later the full trilogy got a release on the other consoles for less.

I actually like the WiiU's minimalist design. It's certainly more attractive than the horrible designs of the tower of Sauron or the big black jenga tower.
