Ellie is actually Samus when she was a kid, and no one can convince me otherwise

Publishers actually had a problem with Ellie's character?
Jeez, it's like there's this unwritten rule in video games that a protagonist had to either be a male, or a mature/sexy female to succeed. 😑

"She finds herself in another world, the Monster World"
Wow, this is definitely different Monster World I've ever imagine since 1994. From European to Arabian to this.
Ellie might be another Monster World hero besides Bocke Lee Temjin, Shion, Asha, & currently Jim.

Is a damn shame that the 3DS rerelease never resurfaced at any kind. I haven't played this game (since of course is US exclusive, and i'm italian) and it looks fun. I found out that the company's website no longer functions as of May of 2019, a month after this video is released. Also, the controversy surrounding the protagonist is just dumb and it doesn't hold well today.

I highly doubt piracy had anything to do with it.
I haven't heard of this game. By the looks of the comments, almost nobody else did either. And THAT is everything that had to do with it going into obscurity:
It reached almost nobody. It certainly reached nobody outside the US.
People wouldn't even be interested in pirating something that isn't popular and isn't known.

Heh to actually think there are plenty of metroidvanias that fallen into obscurity despite the irony knowing that Metroidvanias have been thriving. Another obscured metroidvania i could recall was Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King. I was surprised that this was a thing

Oh, DreamRift did Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion? …and they were blaming their failures on piracy, and not poor marketing?
BTW, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion is a good game. A bit gimmicky, perhaps, but still good.

    So, where are they now?

the piracy concern feels like speculation. most of piracy could arguably be done by people intending to just see if they like the game, or can't afford it anyway. many titles that can be pirated on release still achieve commercial success, so unless they at least know of a correlation, idk why worry.
